Basic Guide: Getting to Hiroshima

Where is Hiroshima?
Located in the western part of Honshu (Japan's main island), Hiroshima is the heart of the Chugoku region. It faces the beautiful Seto Inland Sea, often called the "Mediterranean of Japan."
To give you a sense of distance:
- From Osaka/Kyoto: Approx. 320 km (200 miles) to the west.
- From Tokyo: Approx. 800 km (500 miles) to the west.
Hiroshima is perfectly positioned as a major stop between the Kansai region (Osaka/Kyoto) and Kyushu (Fukuoka).
How to Get There: Shinkansen vs. Flight
For most travelers, the choice comes down to the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) or a Domestic Flight. Here is how they compare:
1. Shinkansen (The Bullet Train) – Recommended for most!
The Shinkansen is the most popular and seamless way to reach Hiroshima.
- From Tokyo: ~4 hours (via Nozomi train).
- From Osaka/Kyoto: ~1.5 hours.
- Why choose it? * City Center to City Center: Hiroshima Station is located right in the heart of the city, saving you long commutes from an airport.
- Punctuality & Comfort: Spacious seats, no security lines, and iconic views (including Mt. Fuji on the right side when departing Tokyo).
- Flexibility: Trains depart every few minutes.
2. Domestic Flight
Flying is an alternative, especially if you are arriving from an international flight at Haneda or Narita.
- Duration: ~90 minutes (flight time).
- Airport Transfer: Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is about 50 minutes by shuttle bus from the city center.
- Why choose it?
- It can be cheaper if you book "Early Bird" discounts with airlines like ANA or JAL, or use Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs).
- Convenient if you are connecting directly from another airport without entering Tokyo city first.
Quick Verdict
- If you are already in Japan (Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka): Take the Shinkansen. It is the fastest "door-to-door" experience and very easy to navigate.
- If you have a Japan Rail Pass: The Shinkansen is your best friend (Note: Nozomi and Mizuho trains require a supplemental fare, but Sakura and Hikari are fully covered).
